Underwater nodes provide the necessary infrastructure for electrical power and data links to continuously operate complex sensor systems with high power consumption on the seafloor. A stable underwater node technology for shallow water installation (< 300 m) has been developed within the framework of COSYNA (Coastal Observation System for the Northern and Arctic Seas). The COSYNA underwater node can be installed with a cable connection 30 km off shore for one year operation. Thus, it allows continuous observation of processes in the oceans and coastal areas. Two COSYNA underwater systems have been in operation since 2014: one off the German island of Helgoland and the second at 79°N offshore Spitsbergen (Svalbard) in the Arctic.
