Maltitol is a sugar substitute with about 90% sweetness of sugar. B. is obtained from corn and wheat starch and is mainly used in sugar-free and low-calorie (diabetic) foods. Maltitol is not harmful to health and has a less laxative effect than sorbitol. It is ideally suited for the production of low-calorie products such as confectionery, chocolate and chewing gum, which can be declared as "sugar-free" or "without added sugar".
